Island Style Images

General Information

Our studio is open Monday through Friday from 10am until 4pm, although we do have after- hours, and some weekend appointments available.

We can create beautiful images in the studio or on location or even both! We strive to create something new with each and every client and enjoy the challenges of shooting at various locations. Joanne has an easy going style and especially loves working with children. She captures each child's unique personality by just letting them be themselves and interacting with them. She will never ask a child to say cheese, and requests that you don't either. Many great images come from a child just being themselves and not even necessarily looking at the camera!

Frequently Asked Questions

THE SESSION
Q. Where does the session take place?
A. For babies one year or younger, sessions need to be in the studio or in your home. For children older than one year, the possibilities are endless! We can create images anywhere from a tropical park to your own backyard! You can choose where you would like to go or we would be happy to give you some suggestions too!

Q. Do we have a consultation before the session?
A. Yes, it is recommended to have a consultation before the actual appointment to go over clothing choices and get a better idea of your vision, as well as to address any of your questions or concerns. This can be done over the phone and takes about 15-20 minutes.

Q. How long do sessions last?
A. Generally normal sessions last anywhere from 30 minutes up to two hours. We allow plenty of time for feeding newborns or playing and getting to know your children and having them feel comfortable.

Q. How far in advance should I schedule my session?
A. Sessions are usually booked about 3 weeks in advance so please call early to ensure your time on the schedule. Beach sessions are more limited, and you may find we are booked as much as 6 to 8 weeks out for this.

Q. Do I need to pay a deposit?
A. We ask for a $250 non-refundable deposit upon booking a session for normal hours, for an after regular business hours session, the deposit is $350. The full amount will then be applied towards your order.

Q. What if my child is sick on the session date?
A. We understand things happen, and we don't want any child who is not feeling well to come in for a session. If your child is ill, we would appreciate as much notice as possible, and we will be happy to reschedule your appointment and transfer the deposit to the new session date.

Q. What time should I arrive for my session?
A. All sessions are by appointment only, so please try to be on time. If you are early, you may have to wait while another session is finishing up. If you are late, you will have less time for your own session. If you anticipate being more than 15 minutes late, please call the studio and you may need to reschedule for another day.

Q. What time of day is best?
A. It is generally recommended to have morning sessions for babies and small children as this seems to be their best time. Beach sessions are only done at sunset (about 45 minutes before the sun goes into the water) and are not recommended for small children.

Q. Should I bring other people to help me with my children?
A. We ask only one person come with the children unless the others are to be photographed as well. Children tend to get over stimulated with several people trying to get them to look a certain way and smile. Often the best images are created when Joanne has the opportunity to interact one- on -one with a child with no one else in the room.

Q. Can we have black and white and color images?
A. Yes, we can create both types of images as well as black and white images with some part of the images hand colored, and we can discuss this prior to the session particularly in the studio. It is best, however, to have a desired goal or outcome for the session so we can be prepared and use the appropriate clothing and backdrops to get the desired look you want.

CLOTHING
These are some general clothing questions, and we will be happy to send you more specific information for your type of session. For individual images of children, almost anything goes. We love jeans, hats, bare feet, bold colors and messy hair! But if more than one person is in the image, it is important to coordinate outfits.

Q. What do you recommend for my family to wear?
A. Simple clothing is best and keeps the focus on the subject. For more than one person in the image, solid colors are generally better then patterns and definitely stay away from stripes, logos and aloha wear or other busy patterns. Casual clothing is best, and we generally always do bare feet so no need to worry about shoes. If there is more than one person in the image, it is important the clothing co-ordinates with each other. Well -fitted but loose clothing is best, especially on the beach. Long skirts and shorts work better than over short ones as we will often be sitting on rocks or in the sand. Adults tend to look better in long or three quarter length sleeves. Children look great in bare skin, and this is the preference for babies under one year old. Small children and babies tend to get fussy with more than one outfit change, so it is best to keep it just one look. Maternity portraits can be clothed or nude. For nude images, hands, fabric or various poses can be used to cover body parts.

For any session, please feel free to bring several outfits and together we can pick the one that will photograph best for the set up and occasion.

Q. What colors are best for black and white portraits?
A. For black and white images, darker colors are preferred and help draw attention to the face and the subjects of the images.

AFTER THE SESSION
Q. When can I see the images?
A. Generally, your portraits are ready to see in approximately ten days after your session. If there is a need to schedule your presentation sooner, we can accommodate that but will need to discuss it beforehand. The presentation is done at our studio during normal business hours with a few appointments also available on Saturdays. You will be seated in our presentation room and see a multi -media slideshow set to music. We will then go through each image and help you determine what is best for your needs. It is a good idea to come to this appointment with a list of what you would like to have.

Q. Is there any other ways to see the presentation?
A. We have a special service that we can provide to you by bringing the presentation to your home. We have various times for this including evening appointments and can work around your schedule. There is a fee of $125 to provide this service.

Q. How long does the presentation last?
A. A one hour time slot is reserved for you to see and choose the images. If you feel you will need more time, please let us know ahead of time, and we can make arrangements as needed.

Q. Who should come to the presentation?
A. Anyone who will be significant during your purchase decisions should be there for the presentation. You will be placing your order at this appointment.

And although children are always welcome at our studio, you may find it much easier to make other arrangements for them during this appointment as it is hard to concentrate and make decisions with little ones tugging at you.

Q. How long do you keep my images?
A. All images are archived for 45 days after a session. After that, all ordered images will be archived for a minimum of one year and non- ordered images may be purged.

Q. Can I reorder more images later?
A. You may order any images we still have on file any time, but we do ask for a minimum re-order of $150.

Q. Can our order be shipped to us?
A. We will be happy to ship the images to you at any location you choose. Just make sure you allow enough time to get the images created and ordered before you leave the island and allow a little extra time in case of the unexpected such as bad weather during your appointment time.

PAYMENT
Q. What forms of payment are accepted?
A. We accept cash, check, Visa or MasterCard.

Q. When do we pay for the order?
A. Because of the custom nature of our work, payment is due in full at the time of ordering.

Q. How long does it take to receive my order?
A. Quality artwork takes time and involves many people in the process. Please allow 6 weeks for your order to be completed. Some orders, including those with Keepsake Books, may take even longer. These works are an investment and an heirloom in your family that simply requires time to create.

Q. Can I "rush" my order?
A. Yes, we do have a rush service at an additional charge of 50% of the total order. We will rush only full orders, not just parts of one order. We will guarantee to have prints ready within ten business days from the time.

COPYRIGHT
Q. Can I scan or copy or download my prints?
A. Professional portraits are artwork and like any other art it is ILLEGAL to reproduce any image without specific written permission from Joanne. It is also illegal to scan, upload or download any images in a computer without written permission including through email. The minimum fine for scanning or copying professional images without permission is $30,000.00. All images are copyrighted by Federal Copyright Laws, and copying of any kind is strictly prohibited.
